His Love Never Quits

after Psalm 136

Maker of iris and eyelash
	His love endures forever
God who sees beyond substance
	His love endures forever
Who holds blood vessels and bones together
	His love endures forever
Who hears a heart cry and nudges another
	His love endures forever
The God of seconds and epochs, sand and blackhole
	His love endures forever

You caught my ceiling-pointed prayers before I knew how to pray
	His love endures forever
You kept silent and waited while I tried to outbest you
	His love endures forever
You wept as I raged at the idol I’d made of you
	His love endures forever
You called my name and claimed me before I ran to my enemy
	His love endures forever
You picked splinters of lies from the tender flesh of my fist
	His love endures forever
You drew my borders and handed me crayons
	His love endures forever

You steadied the ship that bore my newborn great-grandmother
	Your love endures forever
You fortified weakness and gave scared parents your courage
	Your love endures forever
You empowered a young unwed mother to carry her seed to term
	Your love endures forever
You nurtured dormant seeds of faith for generations
	Your love endures forever

You gave me a partner whose heart is for you
	Your love endures forever
You opened my flesh and delivered three new creations
	Your love endures forever
You pricked my skin and saved my kids from the grave
	Your love endures forever
You set our path and made us walk a bleak winter
	Your love endures forever
You turned puddles of grief into ponds of hope
	Your love endures forever

You tether your people, though contentious and fearful
	Your love endures forever
You bind and braid until there is unity
	Your love endures forever
You let what isn’t of you unravel
	Your love endures forever
You have planted and nurtured the mother tree
	Your love endures forever
And opened the canopy for new seedlings to grow
	Your love endures forever

How shall we serve this God of new tomorrows
	whose love endures forever?
Be who I made you. I have, I am, I will
	my love endures forever.
